Piercing Pop Culture Monthly Favorites (September 2025)

I am a proud Letterboxd nerd. In fact, I have far too much fun on my stats page. Without further ado, here are my favorite viewings from last month!

This month was made up of a lot of rewatches and relatively familiar territory. It was actually… kind of boring now that I’m looking at it. Stay tuned for more as I hopefully get more original in October.

Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale (2025)

Hold That Ghost (1941)

The Changeling (1980)

Piercing Pop Culture Favorite Streaming Finds! (Updated August 2025)

One of my favorite things is digging through the darkest, dustiest, unseen corners of the streaming sites. Kids, with a childhood spent at the video store, it is part of my programming. Very rarely have I found the most fun content right on the front page of any site (and don’t get me started about Netflix).

Anywhoo… take a look here for some of my favorite finds during my streaming explorations. Hopefully there’s something you like in the weird, the wacky and certainly, the rare.

YouTube:

Playmates (1972): An ABC Movie of the Week starring Alan Alda, Doug McClure, Barbara Feldon and Connie Stevens as divorced couples with an interesting dynamic. Very 1972, but fun if you’re into the cast.

The Sex Symbol (1974): Listed as an ABC Movie of the Week. Essentially Marilyn Monroe fan-fiction, but I enjoyed this far more than Blonde. A lot of melodramatic scene chewing, but an interesting viewing (once again) if you’re invested in the cast. Starring: Connie Stevens, Shelley Winters, Jack Carter, Don Murray, William Smith and Madelyn Rhue.

San Francisco International (1970): The pilot movie for the single season TV series that can best be described as Airport and Hotel had a baby. Starring: Pernell Roberts, Clu Gulager, Van Johnson. David Hartman and Tab Hunter.

Prime Video:

Satan’s Triangle (1975): Made for TV movie starring Kim Novak, Doug McClure and Alejandro Reyes. A US Coast Guard rescue team arrives at a shipwreck to find a woman trapped on board surrounded by death. An ending that must be seen to be believed. A “chef’s kiss” of delightfulness.

Return of the Living Dead (1985): Probably my favorite zombie film to date. I started this film earlier in the year and actually revisited it deeper into my “Clu Gulager Deep Dive” and am in love. Big, brash, gory and weird. A must see for anyone deep into the horror genre.

Robot Monster (1953): A must see for the schlock, drive-in crowd. Notorious in “bad movie” circles, but I will not hear any Ro-Man slander in this house. Starring George Nader.

Tubi:

Impulse (1974): William Shatner as a serial killer and “gigolo” with “Mommy Issues”? Count us in. Starring William Shatner and Ruth Roman.

Hell Comes to Frogtown (1988): Roddy Piper brings a “particular set of skills” to an apocalyptic waste land. Wacky sci-fi in the best way possible. Come for the Piper, stay for the Frog People, Rory Calhoun and William Smith.
